The award of the latter degree marked the launch of the Romanian translation of Jackendoff's book A Generative Theory of Tonal Music, written in collaboration with the composer Fred Lerdahl. At the same time, he did some truly pioneering work in the growing field of music cognition and coauthored A Generative Theory of Tonal Music. A look of research following this argument, such as studies on the Generative theory of tonal music (Lerdahl & Jackendoff, 1983), MUSACT (Bharucha, 1987) or, very recently, a study by Schulze, Dowling, Tillmann (2012).
